Settlement with For-Profit Will Omit Collecting Millions in Student Debt

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller recently announced that under a new nationwide settlement with Career Education Corp., a for-profit education company, hundreds of Iowa students will receive over $1.4 million in debt relief. Under the settlement, Career Education Corp. (CEC) will omit collecting $493.7 million owed by 179,529 students around the nation, according to the Des Moines Register. The total amount of debt relief for 715 Iowa students is $1,424,662, Miller said at the news conference. “The agreement is largely driven by the forgiveness of debt, and that’s really important to students,” he said.
