Creating Online Discussions That Increase Student Engagement and Measure Learning
As educators, we know discussion forums are where meaningful student interaction happens in our online courses. However, many students do not fully engage in discussions, making assessment a challenge. In this session, we will present a variety of strategies and approaches to online discussions. We will also discuss the impact of instructor presence in online discussions on student engagement and learning. You will have the opportunity to brainstorm ideas for engaging discussions for your own courses and leave with concrete ideas and resources to create discussions that will get students thinking deeply, applying concepts, and actively engaging with their classmates.Outcomes: Be able to create engaging online discussion questions in a variety of formats * Be able to create online discussion questions to assess learning at all levels of Bloom’s taxonomy * Understand the impact of instructor engagement in online discussion forums

Modernize Campus Operations through E-Forms
Overreliance on paper, lack of interdepartmental communication, and inefficient business process design—these are just some of the challenges that higher education institutions are expected to combat while keeping operational costs low. By adopting e-forms technology, which delivers fast deployment and high impact, institutions are modernizing campus operations from contract management to student requests. Beyond simply going paperless, they have been able to increase operational efficiency, cut costs, and deliver responsive services to students and faculty.Outcomes: Standardize information capture and automate critical business processes for rapid ROI * Maintain compliance with federal and state records retention requirements * Identify opportunities for further process optimization through measuring performance analytics

Organizational Readiness for University-Wide Disruptive Application Implementation: A Recipe for Success
Many universities are starting, preparing, or in the midst of implementing large disruptive systems like an ERP or CRM. Why ERP at this time? Most universities did a major ERP implementation as part of Y2K. A refresh (usually 10 years out) was delayed due to financial crisis of 2008. Most universities could only afford a large financial investment in 2013. The past two years has seen a significant move by universities to decide on their ERP future. Interestingly at this time, the ERP landscape has changed. The New School/Parsons School of Design selected Workday for HR, payroll, and finance. We are now live on these systems. The journey to get there was much different from what we usually do for these types of projects. Learn how to prepare your functional departments, IT organization, and entire university for this massive disruptive change in order to succeed.Outcomes: Gain strategies to prepare your organization for success when implementing a disruptive change * Identify the “known unknowns” * Plan for a successful change management

Assessing Return on Investment in Licensed E-Resources through Citation Analysis
We examined articles published by Northeastern faculty members to determine (1) how frequently they cited articles found in our licensed e-resources, and (2) whether those citation rates correlated with usage statistics. We found disciplinary differences in usage compared to citation rates, with STEM resources being somewhat penalized by usage statistics in contrast to other disciplines. We suggest that citation rate data may be worth considering in collection decisions.Outcomes: Identify at least 2 quantitative methods for evaluating library-licensed e-resources * Explore the potential benefits and drawbacks of employing usage data and citation rate data to inform collection decisions

Taking the Guesswork Out of Online Course Design
Come and see the templates and tools Babson College has created to get faculty started with designing online and blended curriculum. Our instructional designers use these templates in a collaborative design process with faculty that allows us to optimally choreograph students’ learning at the course, week, and session levels. We will share this process using specific examples from Babson’s new fully online MBA electives. Take a dive into the templates to better estimate faculty design time and ensure you are staying within the proper credit-hours to meet accreditation requirements.Outcomes: Accurately estimate resource needs and realistic timeframes for online and blended content development * Develop usable templates to estimate and create the proper amount of content based on seat-hours and faculty development hours * Suggest engaging content development options (tools and technologies) for faculty designing online or blended courses

Knowledge Management: Providing Instructions, Not Instruction
Many IT professionals struggle with how much information to ask for or share with their constituents when providing support. Too many questions can frustrate them while not enough information in a solution can discourage them, to the point where they may not ask for help again. Is there a trick to determining the appropriate content and level of information or knowledge sharing to adequately and accurately resolve an incident or fulfill a service request? Sure there is! If you understand the difference between “instructions” and “instruction.”Outcomes: Learn how to assess a customer’s question to determine the difference between providing instructions (knowledge article) and instruction (training) * Create a knowledge article that meets a true need that only your support center can provide * Provide the appropriate level of content to adequately resolve an issue or fulfill a request
