Using the College Environment to Improve Your Higher Ed Projects: The Advantages of Students on IT Project Teams

Students on IT Project Teams

A Clean Slate

College students are encouraged to express their creativity through innovation and teamwork in their courses, so let that attitude transfer over into the work place. Unlike team members who have worked in the field for years, students are more open-minded in terms of how their assignments should be completed. They often use their inexperience as motivation to discover new solutions for problems you didn’t know existed.

Reciprocal Learning

“Working with students ensures that there is an advocate for their needs.”

Recent and future college graduates bring with them a willingness to learn and a different approach to their assigned tasks. This is especially true for projects in our field, as many students may have a better grasp on newer tools and technology. IT projects take their end users into consideration but students are often not directly involved—working with students ensures that there is an advocate for their needs. A fresh perspective not only allows your team to reevaluate their work methods, but also presents learning opportunities for everyone involved, enabling the team to grow and evolve together.

They Have Fresh Energy and Enthusiasm

“Working with friendly, enthusiastic students helps improve [team] morale.”

The college experience allows students to immerse themselves in coursework and projects that interest them. This attitude permeates through everything they do and can be incredibly useful to your project. A student’s exuberance allows for additional flexibility, making it easier for them to adjust to new positions or assignments and to take on new responsibilities. Working with friendly, enthusiastic students helps improve the morale of the team as a whole, making each task easier to accomplish and making the work more fulfilling overall.

The Iterative Process

College reinforces adaptability, enthusiasm and a willingness to help, which are key attributes of any great team. Bringing students onto your project promotes the optimization of your team’s methods— adopting an approach that allows your employees to work better rather than harder.

Have you hired students to work on your IT projects? How did it benefit the student? The team? The project?
